Announcing the Launch Of The Land, Food, and Freedom Journal
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
National Black Food & Justice Alliance Launches The Land, Food, And Freedom Journal to Highlight Black Agrarianism, Food Sovereignty, and Land Justice
The National Black Food & Justice Alliance (NBFJA) proudly announces the launch of The Land, Food, and Freedom Journal, an interdisciplinary publication that curates conversations at the intersections of Black food sovereignty, land justice, academia, and art. This peer-reviewed journal amplifies the voices of Black land stewards, scholars, activists, and culture bearers who are advancing the movement for liberation through innovative land and food strategies and bold visions for the future. The journal will feature a dynamic digital platform to engage readers worldwide and a print circulation to deepen its reach and accessibility within communities.
Published under the guidance of Blackademics, the research arm of NBFJA, and supported by The Agroecology Center, the journal serves as both an archive of Black agrarian knowledge and a living document to inspire ongoing strategies for community resilience and self-determination.
“We are excited to cultivate a peer-reviewed journal that centers the Black agrarian experience,” said Co-Executive Director Cicely Garrett. Dr. Jasmine Jackson, Co-Executive Director, added, “Our dream is for The Land, Food, and Freedom Journal to be a space that amplifies the beautiful spectrum of opportunities where our communities use land, food, art, and academia as tools of resistance and liberation.”
About the Journal
The Land, Food, and Freedom Journal centers Black-led discourse and solutions to address climate change, land theft, food apartheid, and systemic inequities. By weaving together research, storytelling, and art, the journal creates a dynamic space for education, reflection, and organizing. Key features include:
Thought-provoking essays and research from Black scholars and practitioners.
Profiles of Black farmers and land stewards innovating within their communities.
Artistic works exploring the cultural significance of land and food sovereignty.
The journal’s first edition was previewed during NBFJA’s Flourish Film Fest at the Black Farmers Urban Growers Conference in November 2024, where over 400 copies were eagerly received by participants, sparking deeper dialogue on Black food and land liberation. Join us on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 6pm (ET) for our Virtual Journal Launch Party, celebrating the release of this inaugural journal with contributors and our community as well as the unveiling of our digital platform.
