THE OPPORTUNITY

As the National Black Food and Justice Alliance (NBFJA or the Alliance) continues to grow, we are now seeking applications and nominations for a Digital Strategist to join our team.

Reporting to the Communications & Culture Director, the Digital Strategist will play a key role in supporting NBFJA’s vision by shaping and expanding our digital presence across platforms. This includes managing content and engagement for NBFJA’s core social media accounts, The Land, Food and Freedom Journal, and The Agroecology Center. The strategist will also contribute to narrative strategy and digital campaign execution in alignment with our broader organizing goals.

The ideal candidate will be a creative storyteller, skilled content editor, and experienced digital organizer who thrives in collaborative, mission-driven environments. They will have a deep understanding of digital engagement as a tool for movement building and political education, and a commitment to using media to uplift Black food sovereignty, land justice, and collective liberation.

Candidates with lived experience as Black American or as part of the African Diaspora are particularly encouraged to apply.


ABOUT NBFJA

National Black Food and Justice Alliance is a coalition of Black-led organizations working towards cultivating and advancing Black leadership, building Black self-determination, Black institution building and organizing for Black liberation through food sovereignty and land justice. 

The Alliance seeks to achieve this by,

  • engaging in broad based coalition organizing for black food and land

  • increasing visibility of Black led narratives and work

  • advancing Black led visions for just and sustainable communities, and 

  • building capacity for self-determination within our local, national, and international food systems and land rights work.

Our areas of focus include black food sovereignty, self-determining food economies, and land. We approach food sovereignty, land and self-determining food economies via the lens of healing, organizing and resistance against anti-Blackness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DIGITAL STRATEGIST

The Digital Strategist is a creative communicator and systems thinker who will collaborate across teams to elevate the voice, campaigns, and vision of NBFJA. They will work closely with the Communications and Culture Director, members of the Alliance, and external partners to shape digital storytelling that is aligned with our values. More specifically, they will:

Social Media Strategy and Management

  • Lead strategy, scheduling, and content creation across platforms for NBFJA, The Agroecology Center, and the Land, Food and Freedom Journal

  • Monitor engagement, trends, and analytics to shape content direction and deepen reach and visibility

  • Ensure alignment of tone, visuals, and messaging with organizational values and movement priorities

Content Creation and Multimedia Production

  • Generate and develop timely and resonant multimedia content in collaboration with Communications and Field Teams—including graphics, reels, short videos, quote cards, and stories

  • Edit and repurpose recorded video/audio content for use across platforms (e.g., interviews, webinars, storytelling clips)

  • Archive digital media and maintain organized systems for future use

Digital Event Coordination

  • Coordinate and support online events such as panels, workshops, launches, and live streams

  • Manage technical setup, troubleshoot issues, and support audience engagement
    Prepare post-event materials including recordings and recap content

Strategic Collaboration and Campaign Support

  • Contribute to the development and execution of digital strategies for organizational campaigns and member-facing initiatives
    Work across teams to ensure content reflects the lived experiences and leadership of NBFJA members

  • Support innovation in digital political education, accessibility, and storytelling

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS FACING THE DIGITAL STRATEGIST

NBFJA seeks a creative, highly organized, and values-aligned team member with strong digital storytelling skills and a commitment to Black liberation. While not every candidate will possess all of the following, the ideal Digital Strategist will bring:

  • At least 3 years of experience in digital communications, multimedia content creation, and social media strategy

  • Proficiency in video/audio editing tools (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, Canva, Descript, CapCut)

  • Familiarity with digital event platforms (e.g., Zoom, Mighty Networks, Streamyard, YouTube Live)

  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills,  verbally and in writing and work with a diverse population both, in-person and virtually

  • Experience working collaboratively in a remote team environment

  • A grounded commitment to Black liberation, grassroots organizing, and food and land justice

  • Strong analytical skills with experience in organization and project coordination.

  • Commitment to addressing/confronting anti-Blackness; strong racial, gender, class, disability, environmental/social justice lens and equity and practice of consistently applying anti-oppression principles and practices.

  • The ability and desire to deemphasize perfectionism and lean into a new process in a non-traditional working environment.

  • Keen attention to detail and highly developed organizational and project development skills.

  • A collaborative working style that includes flexibility, curiosity, responsiveness, adaptability,  and a collaborative working style rooted in political vision and care

  • High Emotional Intelligence, sense of humor, healthy boundaries and willingness to seek support from colleagues

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS DETAILS

While this position is contract, we are looking to contract someone who will move into a staff position within 6-9 months. The salary range for this position starts at $68,000 annually plus a competitive benefits package (once transitioned to permanent) including but not limited to:
