As the National Black Food and Justice Alliance (NBFJA or the Alliance) continues to grow, we are now seeking applications and nominations for a BLP Coordinator to join our team.

Reporting to the Black Land & Power Director, the new BLP Coordinator will support NBFJA’s Black Land and Power workgroup by providing logistical and administrative support, including scheduling and note-taking, meeting facilitation, research, database management, as well as creating and managing internal procedures.

The ideal candidate will have a passionate commitment to the mission and goals of NBFJA including food justice, land sovereignty and environmental justice.  They will have at least 2 years of experience with project support and administrative coordination; preferably at a movement-based or social service organization. They should be detail-oriented and proficient in mainstream digital tools, databases, and software to support office and administrative functions. 

The ideal candidate will also have a sincere interest in the history of land theft, genocide, and food instability in the West - especially how those crimes impact Indigenous, Brown, and Black people. They will be an introspective, curious learner with great interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will also have initiative, be a strong, flexible communicator and value a collaborative, cohesive workflow. Lastly, candidates with lived-experience as a Black American or a member of the African Diaspora are particularly suited for this role.

ABOUT THE ALLIANCE

The National Black Food and Justice Alliance is a coalition of Black-led organizations working towards cultivating and advancing leadership, building self-determination, creating institutions, and organizing for collective Black liberation through food sovereignty and land justice. 

The Alliance seeks to achieve this by:

  • Engaging in broad-based coalition organizing for black food and land

  • Increasing visibility of Black-led narratives and work

  • Advancing Black-led visions for just and sustainable communities, and 

  • Building capacity for self-determination within our local, national, and international food systems and land rights work.

Our areas of focus include Black food sovereignty, self-determining food economies, and land. We approach food sovereignty, land and self-determining food economies via the lens of healing, organizing and resistance against anti-Blackness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FACING THE BLP COORDINATOR

NBFJA’s Black Land and Power (BLP) initiative aims to diminish the negative impact of land loss and land exploitation in Black communities and recover land for community-controlled regenerative agriculture. This work is accomplished by 1) supporting the building of local coalitions centering land reform and defense practices focused on land retention, protection, and recovery; 2) building a cadre of Black land stewards and farmers; 3) managing a non-extractive fund (Resource Commons) for land acquisition, farm equipment, and other food system infrastructure development; 4) building a network of Black Community Land Trusts, and; 5) protecting Black land.

The BLP Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Planning and facilitating monthly BLP committee meetings with NBFJA members to design and implement BLP offerings.

  • Providing administrative support for BLP’s resource and funding opportunities, including, but not limited to, scheduling information sessions and applicant interviews, collecting and organizing material submissions for reviewers, and tracking fund disbursements. 

  • Updating and maintaining all BLP-related forms, documents, and archives. 

  • Supporting the expansion of the roster of technical assistance providers for matching TA providers with resource recipients. 

  • Documenting NBFJA’s existing efforts to support land steward training opportunities..

  • Working with NBFJA’s Communications Team to ensure curricula, videos, photos, etc. from land steward trainings are recorded, archived, edited, and shared via member portal.

  • Helping to curate land defense trainings that will benefit NBFJA members and Black land title-holders at-risk of dispossession.

  • Compiling and updating national data on the current state of land governance within the Black community, with a focus on land held in trust.

  • Supporting the creation and maintenance of relationships with existing Black-led community land trusts across the US with the goal of adding farmland to their existing land holdings.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS FACING THE NEW BLP COORDINATOR

While it is not necessary to possess each of these characteristics, the following is a list of preferred qualities and characteristics necessary for this role.

  • 2-3 years of experience with a movement-based or social service organization with project coordination, administrative support, organizing, community engagement or related fields.  

  • Strong administrative organizational skills with keen attention to detail and the willingness to problem-solve with colleagues and members of the Alliance.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to respond and support people in person, via phone, and email.

  • The ability to collaborate with senior and lateral peers in achieving long-term and short-term goals, prioritizing tasks, summaries, follow-ups, and next steps. 

  • A growing understanding of food justice, land sovereignty and environmental justice. 

  • High Emotional Intelligence, sense of humor, healthy boundaries and willingness to offer and seek support from colleagues.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

The starting salary for this position is $60,000 annually plus a competitive benefits package, including but not limited to:
